Qualifications

  • 2011: "Habilitation" (Post-doctorate title, "Agregação" in Portuguese) in the area of ​​English Linguistics on 8 and 9 June. Title of Lesson: "Seven Concepts in Search of a Text". Title of Report: "English Linguistics 3: Semantics and Pragmatics".

  • 2002: PhD in Linguistics (area of ​​specialization: English Linguistics). University of Minho (with co-guidance by Prof. Victor Raskin, Purdue University, IN, USA). Title of thesis: "Humor, Language and Narrative: Analysing Comic Literary Discourse".

​

  • 1995: Master degree in English Language, Literature and Culture. Title of dissertation: "Linguistic Ambiguity in William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors".

  • 1991: Bachelor degree in Portuguese and English Teaching (a 5-year programme at the time). Minho University.

Areas of Research 

Pragmatics of the English Language. Sociolinguistics (in the English-speaking context). Discourse Analysis. Studies of Humor (both in its literary and non-literary expressions). â€‹

​

Current research interests include the analysis of online news discourse as well as the language of "social media" on the Internet, in light of sociolinguistic variables such as gender, nationality, ethnicity and social class, among others, especially as regards the expression, or concealment, of prejudice.
